Remembering Brent Willey: A Pillar of Our Community and a Champion for Youth

Posted on

New York City rugby lost a giant recently with Brent Willey’s passing. To many, Brent was the rock and foundation of the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) rugby community. A standout athlete who was inducted into the Lehigh University Football Hall of Fame, Brent arrived at the NYAC as a young engineer and remained a constant, supportive presence in the rugby world for many years.

To us at Rugby4All, Brent was more than a legendary figure: he was a founding believer.

A Foundation Built on Generosity

When Rugby4All was just an idea, Brent was there. Alongside our Executive Chairman, Dr. Joseph Kennedy, he provided the ground-floor support that allowed us to launch our first middle school programs. In those early years, Brent’s steadfast generosity kept us afloat. He did not just donate; he invested in the future of New York City’s youth.

The Essence of Hospitality

His contemporary and NYAC teammate, Craig Fallon, shared that “no one did more and expected less accolades than Brent. He was the embodiment of the gentle warrior who preferred to do his magic behind the scenes and let others take the bows.”

Craig continued by noting that “in the simple game of rugby, he was the essence of competition, athleticism, and hospitality. Always…the first to reach in his pocket and the one who started with a smile and ended with one, he was everything you wanted in a teammate and friend.”

A Legacy That Lives On

Brent brought this same generosity, warmth, and enthusiasm for rugby to a new generation of youngsters developing in a positive environment. He believed in the power of rugby to change lives. Because of him, hundreds of New York City students have had the chance to run with the ball and find their own path.

We extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Mari, and his entire family. When we take the field this season, we do so with Brent’s spirit in our hearts.

Rest in peace, Brent. Thank you for everything.
