What an incredible year it’s been with the students at De La Salle Academy (DLSA)! For the past year, we’ve had the privilege of teaching flag rugby to over 30 amazing 6th-8th graders. On May 31st, all that hard work led to a historic moment: for the first time ever, a DLSA athletic team competed against other schools!
Powered by Rugby4All’s coaches, the DLSA team arrived at the Play Rugby flag tournament on Randall’s Island ready to shine. And shine they did! They started the day with an unbelievable 3-0 run in their pool play, facing off against schools from all over the five boroughs. It was amazing to see players scoring their first-ever tries, making valiant defensive stops, and setting up their teammates with perfect passes.
The team’s incredible performance earned them a spot in the Championship game against PS 279, a fantastic program with over 20 years of experience. Our players put on an incredible display of rugby, matching their opponents try-for-try. With no time left on the clock, the score was tied 3-3. In a nail-biting finish, PS 279 managed to score the game-winning try, ending the match 4-3.
Though our players (and coaches!) were naturally disappointed with the final score, we were bursting with pride for the incredible effort, skill, and sportsmanship they showed. They left the tournament with unforgettable memories and a brand-new love for the game. Even after a long six-hour day, as we waited for the bus, they were all still running around the field, kicking and passing the ball.
It was a true testament to the positive impact we’re making together in the community and the new doors opening in the world of rugby. A huge thank you to our sponsors and donors who make these opportunities possible. Coaches Chris and Hubert could not have been prouder.
We’re so excited to see DLSA continue to build on this success in the upcoming fall and spring seasons!
